Kaj Leo Johannesen

Kaj Leo Holm Johannesen ( born August 28, 1964 in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands ) is the prime minister of the Faroe Islands ( Løgmaður ) and Unionist politician ( Sambandsflokkurin ). Previously, he was active as a Faroese football goalkeeper and handball player.

Football

Association

Johannesen did not begin until 1984 with the football games and was until 2007 Goalkeeper of HB Tórshavn, came last, however, only rarely and mainly for the second team to use. He played 299 appearances for his club and is therefore in second place after the record player Rúni Nolsøe. He made his debut in 1984 on matchday twelfth of the first division in the 1:4 home defeat against LIF Leirvík when he replaced the previous goalkeeper Mikkjal Mikkelsen for the last three games. His first game completed Johannesen on 25 September 1991 at the European Championship qualifier against Denmark when he came on in the 56th minute for Jens Martin Knudsen at a score of 0:2. The game in Landskrona was finally lost with 0:4. June 16, 1992 Johannesen came at the World Cup qualifier against Cyprus, which was lost in Toftir 0-2, for his last national use.

For the Faroese handball club Kyndil Tórshavn Johannesen also played and scored in the Premier League until 2005 in 163 games total of 625 goals.

Politician

From 1997 to 2000 Johannesen was councilor in the municipality of Tórshavn. Since 2002 he is a member of the state parliament Løgting. In 2004 he was re-elected and there is Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee. Since 2004 he is also Chairman of the Unionist Party.

Kaj Leo Johannesen 2007 Second on his party's list for the general election. The first-placed Edmund Joensen he represented briefly in December 2007 as substitutes. On 24 September 2008 Johannesen became the new Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands after the resignation of Jóannes Eidesgaard.

Private

Kaj Leo is the son of Karin, born Holm, and Hans Leo Johannesen from Mykines. He is married to Jorun, born Bærentsen, and together they have two children. Johannesen is a trained skipper and entrepreneurs in the fish trade.

The Faroese punk band 200 dedicated to him in 2005 a mocking song entitled " Sig ikki nei Kaj " ( Do not say no, Kaj ). At least at one point he and the politically engaged punk rockers still have the same attitude: They fought for the anti-discrimination law adopted in 2006 for the protection of homosexuality in the Faroe Islands.
