Kamikawa, Hokkaido

Kamikawa (Jap.上 川 町, -chō ) is a city on the Japanese island of Hokkaido Kamikawa district in the sub-prefecture Kamikawa.

Geography

Kamikawa is located in central Hokkaido along the river Ishikari. Populated with 4044 inhabitants ( as of December 31, 2013) is the broad river valley in the north. However, the largest part of the 1049.24 km ² of the municipal territory is uninhabited highlands: the Kitami Mountains area in the north, the mountains of Daisetsu -zan in the center and the Ishikari Mountains area in the south.

The population density is about 4 inhabitants per square kilometer is. The mayor is Satō since 2008 Yoshiji.

Attractions

Kamikawa is known for the gorge Soun - kyō the Ishikari River, which belongs to the Daisetsuzan National Park. The name comes from the former Ainu village Sōunbetsu, which means "river with many waterfalls ." The two largest waterfalls in the gorge are the Ryusei no Taki (流星 の 滝) of 90m height and the Ginga no Taki (銀河 の 滝) of 120m height, both of which are among the top 100 waterfalls in Japan. From January to March, every year, the Ice Festival Sounkyo Hyōbaku Matsuri (層雲峡 氷 瀑 まつり, " Sounkyo - ice-falls - hard " ) instead, a variety of illuminated snow and ice sculptures will be built at the along the frozen river. Further facilities in the canyon hot springs Sounkyo Onsen which a variety Hotels, Inns ( Ryokan ), inns and hostels are located.
