Keiji Haino

Keiji Haino (Japanese灰 野 敬 二Haino Keiji, May 3, 1952 in Chiba, Japan) is a Japanese multi-instrumentalist (guitar, vocals, hurdy gurdy, percussion, electronics, ethnic instruments ) and composer. He is one of the important musical frontier workers between free jazz, noise and rock music and is currently living in Tokyo.

Work

Haino dealt influenced by Antonin Artaud first with theater before the improvisation ensemble Lost Aaraaff founded in 1970. The mid-1970s, he worked with Magical Power Mako and film composer Toru Takemitsu. Then he ran numerous bands and projects such as God ` s Orchestra White One Man Theatre, Fushitsusha, Nijiumu, Vajra, Aihiyo, Knead (with ruin ), Head Rush and Sanhedrin. Furthermore, he has performed as a soloist, but also as a duo or trio with improvising musicians as Kazutoki Umezu, John Zorn, Bill Laswell, Peter Brötzmann, Thurston Moore, Tony Conrad, Mayo Thompson, Hans Reichel, Christian Marclay, Fred Frith and Lee Konitz.

He played both with ensembles such as Zeitkratzer, fist or AMM as a duo Kikuri with Merzbow and has appeared at numerous international festivals around the world. Unlike his early work, his work from the 1980s is very dense documented.
