Ken Morrow

Arlington Kenneth " Ken " Morrow ( born October 17, 1956 in Flint, Michigan ) is a retired American professional ice hockey player (defender) who played from 1980 to 1989 for the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League.

Career

As a junior he played for the Bowling Green State University with Mike Liut. In the NHL Amateur Draft 1976 it chose the New York Islanders in the fourth round as 68th out. In the same year, the New England Whalers in the WHA Amateur Draft secured in 1976 in the eighth round to 86th point, the rights for the WHA.

Even in his time at the University he played for the U.S. national ice hockey team at the Ice Hockey World Championship in 1978. After another year at Bowling Green State University, he joined the U.S. National Team and spent the 1979/80 season with the preparation for the Olympic Winter Games. At the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, he was part of the " Miracle on Ice", as surprising, the U.S. team won the gold medal.

Right after the Olympics, he moved to the New York Islanders and managed immediately in the NHL breakthrough. With him in defense of Dave Lewis was dispensable, which became the key to a barter transaction in which the Islanders Butch Goring brought by the Los Angeles Kings. With Morrow and Goring in the Islanders squad 1979/80 brought the end of the season's first Stanley Cup in the club's history. Morrow counted as one of the few players who could be in a year Olympic gold medalist and Stanley Cup winner.

Morrow remained with the Islanders and was able to win four consecutive Stanley Cups. As a defender, he was not a great scorer, but many of his points came in key game situations. This is also an over -time goal in the playoffs of the 1983 season / 84th

After ten years in the jersey of the Islanders forced him discomfort in the knee to end his career. He worked as an assistant coach, among others in the Kansas City Blades in the IHL before he returned as an assistant coach and scout for the Islanders.

In 1995 he was honored with induction into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame.
