Kirchleerau ( in the local dialect Chilchlerb, χɪlχ ː ˌ le ː rb) is a municipality in the district of Zofingen in the canton of Aargau. It lies in the middle Suhrental.

Geography

The village on the eastern edge of the Suhrentals has no center, but is a scattered settlement, the individual districts are loosely connected to each other. The settlement is situated in a side valley and is separated by an average of 20 meters high lateral moraine from the actual Suhrental. The moraine was created during the Ice Age, during the retreat of the Reuss glacier. The development has grown together with that of Moosleerau. History

Finds of bricks and remains of walls indicate that the area was already inhabited by the Romans. Lerowe was first mentioned in documents in 1248, the name first appeared in 1306 in the Habsburg Kylchleren land register. The name comes from the Old High German lewirouwo what " the water near land of graves " means. In the Middle Ages, the village was in the territory of the Counts of Lenzburg, later the Counts of Kyburg. After these had died out, the Habsburgs, the new rulers were in 1264.

1415 conquered the Swiss Aargau; Kirchleerau now belonged to the subject territory of Berne, the so-called Bernese Aargau. Since the 15th century, the village was part of the rule Rued, a judicial district within the Office of Lenzburg. The owner of the domain were those of the lower courts and were the major landowners. After several noble families from the surrounding area had been in the possession of the dominion, it was acquired in 1520 by a native of Italy nobles of May.
