Kirishi

Kirishi (Russian Кириши ) is a city in Russia with 52 309 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ). It is located about 115 km south of Saint Petersburg in the Leningrad Oblast, on the right bank of the river Volkhov. The city is the center of Rajons same name.

Kirishi is located in a neighborhood that was originally settled by Finnish tribes. The migration of Slavic tribes started in the 6th century. In the Middle Ages was here with the river Volkhov one of the trade routes "from the Varangians to the Greeks " (ie, from Scandinavia to Byzantium ). The first mention of Kirishi dates from the 1693. The origin of the town name is not secured. However, there is a legend according to which the name of the town goes back to a settler from Novgorod, the Kirscha said. On the opposite side of the river from the village Kirishi Solzy was in the 19th century (today Novye Kirishi ), which belonged to the family of brothers Bestuzhev, who were among the participants of the Dekabristenaufstands.
