Boksitogorsk

Boksitogorsk (Russian Бокситогорск; Bauxitogorsk also ) is a city in the northwestern Russian Leningrad Oblast. She has (October 14, 2010 Balance ) 16,585 inhabitants.

Geography

The city is situated on the edge of the Tikhvin ridge about 230 km east of the Oblasthauptstadt Saint Petersburg on river Pjardomlja, a tributary of the Woloschba in the river system of the Neva.

Boksitogorsk is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

The first evidence for the presence of reddish rocks in the region of today's date from the year 1869. 1916 were sent by engineer P. Timofeyev from Tikhvin rock samples at the Geological Committee in St. Petersburg, which analyzed these and then explored the Tikhvin bauxite deposit.

1929 began with the dismantling, and a miners' settlement arose. This was awarded in 1935 under the present name ( боксит / boksit the Russian spelling of bauxite is ) the status of an urban-type settlement and 1950, the city law.

In the city the POW camp consisted of 157 German prisoners of war of World War II. Heavy sufferers were treated in the POW Hospital 1114.

Boksitogorsk maintains partnerships with Finnish places Harjavalta, Kiukainen and Nakkila.

Culture and sights

In 14 km from the city of distant village Listwenka of Rajons Boksitogorsk the Mother of God Birth Church ( церковь Рождества Богородицы / Tserkov Roschdestwa Bogoroditsy ) is from the 16th century.

When Rudnaja Gorka village 30 kilometers away is the natural monument declared Raguscha river which disappears into sinkholes and runs about two kilometers underground.

Economy and infrastructure

City -forming enterprise is the belonging to RUSAL Boksitogorski glinosjom ( Boksitogorsker alumina), which degrades here bauxite and alumina processed to concentrate. The factory Boksitogorski polimer manufactures medical plastic products. There are also companies in the construction and building materials industry and the food industry.

Nearest passenger station Bolshoi Dvor 20 kilometers north of the town on the railway line opened in 1906 Saint Petersburg - Vologda - Kirov ( kilometer 225). From there branches a freight line from after Boksitogorsk and the more southerly bauxite surface mines.

The A114 trunk road Saint Petersburg - Vologda passes about ten kilometers north of Boksitogorsk.
