Koromfe (also Kurumfe ) is a Gur language which is mainly spoken in the north of Burkina Faso.

The distribution area of ​​language consists of rural areas, the crescent west, south and east of the city Djibo extend; few speakers live in neighboring Mali.

Koromfe is - very unusual for a Gur language - no tonal language and is threatened by the more dominant languages ​​Mòoré and Fulfulde strong extinction. Koromfe can be divided into an eastern and a western dialect divide, which was described in the grammar of John Rennison 1997 and on which the representation is based in this article.

Phonology

Vowels

Koromfe has five full vowels, each of which has a correspondence with advanced tongue root, as well as a schwa. All vowels also appear in a nasalized form.

Consonants

Koromfe has 17 phonemic consonants. In addition, there are the following allophones:

  • The Tap / ɾ / (except in foreign words ) an allophone of / d /, which appears as [d ] only in word-initial and after nasal consonants,
  • The fricative / ɣ / is an allophone of / g /, which appears in the initial position, after nasal consonants and near a high vowel with advanced tongue root as [g ],
  • The consonants / j, w, h / also appear in the nasalized forms [ ĵ, w, h ].
