Košice Region

The Košice Region ( Košice ) is an administrative region in the south-eastern Slovakia.

Geography

The Kraj has an area of ​​6755 km ² and 792 991 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011) and is located in eastern Slovakia. The West of Krajs is more mountainous, while the East, however, is rather flat. West of Košice covers the eastern part of the Slovak Ore Mountains, with its subdivisions (such as Slovak Karst, Slovak Paradise, Volovské Hills and Čierna hora ). Between the Hills volcanic Slanské and the Ore Mountains extends the Kaschauer boiler. East of Slanské Hills, the landscape of the East Slovak Lowland and its subdivisions East Slovak hills and East Slovakian level. In the north- east rises the volcanic Vihorlatgebirge and around the village of Slovenské Nové Mesto, in the south there is the Zemplínske Hills, where there is a small part of the world famous Tokaj wine region. A greater flow of Krajs is the Hornád. Other rivers are the Slaná the southwest, Torysa in the center, Topľa, Laborec, Ush, Latorica and a very small part of the Tisza River in the east. In Michalovce is the large Zemplínska šírava, an artificial lake. The highest mountain is the Krajs Stolica in the Slovak Ore Mountains ( 1476 m nm), the deepest point of the Krajs, who is also at the same time that Slovakia, situated on the river Bodrog at Streda nad Bodrogom (94 m nm) as he leaves the Slovakia.

There are two national parks, one complete, the other is in the majority Kraj: Slovenský kras ( Slovak Karst ) and Slovenský raj ( Slovak Paradise ). In addition, two areas are managed as conservation areas: Vihorlat and Latorica.

Administratively borders of the territory to the Prešov Region in the north, at the Ukrainian Transcarpathian Oblast in the east, to the Hungarian counties Szabolcs -Szatmár -Bereg and Borsod -Abaúj -Zemplén in the southeast and south and Banskobystrický kraj in the West.

Historical administrative units

In the Kingdom of Hungary, it served several counties: Parts of the county Gemer and small Hont in the southwest and the county Zips in the northwest. The population density is 115/km ², slightly more than the Slovak average ( 110/km ²). The capital city is Košice ( Kassa ). , Other major cities are Ves ( Zipser Neudorf ), Rožňava ( Rosenau ) and Michalovce ( Michalovce ). Overall, the landscape association of 440 municipalities, 17 cities. The Slovaks form according to the 2001 census 81.8 % of the population. The Hungarian minority in the south strongly represented (11.2%) and there is also a Roma minority ( 3.9%).

After religion, the Roman Catholic Church is the most represented with 59.5 %; the second place is the most strongly represented here Greek Catholic Church with 11%; other churches, the Reformed Church with 6.4%, Protestant church with AB 4.4% and the Orthodox Church with 1.8%. 11.8 % of the residents identified themselves as atheists.
