Küçükçekmece is the capital of the district of the Turkish province of İstanbul as well as a district on the European side of İstanbul. According to the last census Küçükçekmece had 669 081 inhabitants ( as of December 2008).

History

The settlement dates back to the Greek Rhegium (Greek Ῥήγιον ).

Geography

Küçükçekmece is a quite large and densely populated municipality in the western Istanbul and was named after the lake of the same name, adjacent. In 1987 a total of 27 district split ( including the two villages Kayabaşı and Şamlar ) from the circle Bakırkoy. The currently valid district border of Küçükçekmece were made after also Avcılar 1992, was made to the district.

Küçükçekmeces surface amounts to 118 km ² with a beach of 7 km in length. In the immediate neighborhood is İstanbul 's Atatürk Airport Havalimanı. The distance to the center of Istanbul is 23 km.
