La Plata

La Plata is the capital of the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is still within the urban area of the City of Buenos Aires, whose center lies about 60 kilometers northwest of the city. La Plata is with 740 369 inhabitants ( 2010) one of the larger cities of the country. It has a modern town, since it has been strictly applied symmetrically.

History

La Plata was created 1873-1884 by architect Pedro Benoit on the drawing board to separate provincial capital and the state capital. Buenos Aires was transformed into the Federal District Distrito Federal simultaneously and thus separated from the province.

In 1885, the city had 21,792 inhabitants already ( including 8918 Argentines, 12,874 Italians ), almost all were still living in wooden buildings. At the same time the construction of a double channel of the La Plata should be connected to the 5 km northeast of Ensenada harbor lying began.

1952, after the death of Eva Perón, the city was renamed " Ciudad Eva Perón ". After the coup against President Juan Perón in 1955 they reverted to its old name.

In the vicinity of La Plata for a while Adolf Eichmann lived in the village of Joaquín Gorina.

Business and education

La Plata is primarily a seat of heavy industry. Another important sector is the administrative apparatus by far the most populous province of Argentina. La Plata has a respected state university ( Universidad Nacional de La Plata) and a natural history museum, the La Plata Museum.

Attractions

The center of town is the Plaza Moreno. Cathedral of La Plata, where the foundation stone of the city's biggest attraction of La Plata is to be seen as well. The Neo-Gothic church was built in 1885-1999 and is one of the largest churches in South America. Furthermore, the city council ( Palacio Municipal) worth seeing, as well as the Natural History Museum (Museo de Ciencias Naturales ). The museum mainly exhibits collections of Argentine researchers Perito Moreno and Florentino Ameghino.
