Laissey

Laissey is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Laissey is located on 266 m, about 17 km east-northeast of the city of Besançon ( straight line ). The village is located in the Doubs Valley on the right the north side of the river, drawing a sharp bend here, in the extreme north- western ridges of the Jura, between the Mont Souvance in the north and the Côte de Vaite in the south.

The area of ​​2.86 km ² municipal area comprises a portion of Doubstals. The Doubs flows here with several turns by a usually around 500 m wide, flat alluvial plain to the west and at the same time forms the waterways of the Rhine- Rhone Canal. The valley is deeply incised between two mountain ranges of the system of law - edge chain, which form anticlines in geological- tectonic terms. Due to the erosive power of the river parts of these anticlines were worn, so steep, crowned by rocky walls slopes emerged. North of the Doubsbogens the Mont Souvance collected ( 549 m ) with its striking rock band (southern leg of an anticline ). The northern boundary runs in a narrow saddle between Mount Souvance and the neighboring mountain Pic d' Aigremont. To the south, the municipality's area covers over a steep, interspersed with rock walls slope down to the crest of the Côte de Vaite which separates the Doubs Valley from the adjacent first Jura plateau. With 592 m is achieved at the height of the highest point of Côte Laissey.

History

In the Middle Ages Laissey formed part of the feudal rule of Neuchâtel. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. In the 19th century, iron ore was mined at Laissey. The economic life of the village was dominated in the second half of the 19th century by a weaving. This was in 1901, replaced by the Usine Bost Frères, which specializes in tool manufacture.

Attractions

The village church of Laissey was built in the 18th century. Popular viewpoints on the Doubs Valley are the Mont Souvance and the ruins of the Château de Vaite, which originally dates from the 13th century, but was demolished in 1793.

Population

With 464 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Laissey one of the small communities of the department of Doubs. After the population had been in the first half of the 20th century, mostly in the range 450-580 people, a population decline were recorded since the early 1970s. Only recently, there is again a slight upward trend.

Economy and infrastructure

Laissey since the late 18th century was an embossed by the water-dependent commercial village. Today, the Usine Bost Frères is the main employer ( the leader in the production of pliers ).
