Saint-Hilaire (Doubs)

Saint- Hilaire is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Saint- Hilaire is located at 350 m, 9 km west of Baume- les -Dames, and about 20 km northeast of the city of Besançon (air line). The village is located in the rolling countryside between the river valleys of Doubs and Ognon, in an elevated position on the western slope of the ridge Pinfou.

The area of ​​2.64 km ² municipal area includes a portion in the extreme north- western ridges of the Jura. The western part of the area is occupied by a pool, which is on average 320 m. It consisted mainly of arable and meadow land. It is bordered basin of the rising ridge of Pinfou (380 m) in the east and the Bois du Poirier ( 386 m the highest elevation of Saint- Hilaire is achieved here ) in the southeast. In the whole area there are no surface watercourses, because the rainwater seeps into the karst underground.

Neighboring municipalities of Saint- Hilaire are Le Puy L' Écouvotte and in the north, Breconchaux in the east, the south and Roulans Vennans in the West.

History

Since the Middle Ages Saint- Hilaire belonged to the rule of the cathedral chapter of Besançon. Here the mother church of Saint- Hilaire was founded for the surrounding area during the 12th century. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France.

Attractions

The present building of the church of Saint- Hilaire was built from 1769 to 1779 in the classical style in the form of a three-aisled hall church. Saint- Hilaire has a rich interior, which was moved here from various churches and monasteries of the region during the French Revolution and saved from destruction. These include a baptismal font from the 14th century, the main altar from the 18th century and various statues from the 17th and 18th centuries. In the center some characteristic houses from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved in the style of Franche -Comté.

Population

With 163 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Saint- Hilaire is one of the smallest municipalities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1881 143 persons were still counted ), a significant population increase has been recorded since the early 1990s again. Since then, the population has more than doubled.

Economy and infrastructure

Saint- Hilaire was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) and forestry embossed village. Even today, the inhabitants live on the merits of the activity in the first sector. Outside of the primary sector, there are few jobs in the village. Some employed persons are also commuters who engage in the surrounding larger towns of their work.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a secondary road that leads from Roulans to L' Écouvotte. The nearest links to the A36 motorway is located at a distance of about 10 km. Further road links exist with Le Puy and Séchin.
