Laja Municipality

The municipality Laja is a district in the department of La Paz in the South American Andes State of Bolivia.

Location in near space

The municipality Laja is one of four Municipalities of the Province of Los Andes and is located in the southern part of the province. It is bordered on the west, south and south-east by the province Ingavi, on the east by the province of Murillo, and to the north by the municipality of Pucarani.

The municipality has 83 localities ( Localidades ), the administrative center of the municipality is Laja with 707 inhabitants ( 2001) in the eastern part of the county.

Geography

The municipality Laja is on an average height of 3900 m southeast of Lake Titicaca on the Bolivian Altiplano between the Andes mountain ranges of the Cordillera Occidental and the Cordillera Central in the west to the east.

The mean annual temperature of the region is located at 8 ° C, the annual precipitation is 500-600 mm (see climate chart El Alto). The region has a pronounced diurnal climate, the monthly average temperatures vary only slightly between 7 ° C in July and 11 ° C in December. The monthly rainfall range from less than 10 mm during the months of June and July and close to 100 mm from December to February.

The municipality had at the last census of 2001 a population density of 24.0 inhabitants / km ². The life expectancy of newborns in 2001 was 62.6 years, the infant mortality rate of 5.6 per cent ( 1992) rose slightly to 6.2 percent in 2001.

The literacy rate for those over 19 years is 71.7 percent, and that 85.5 percent of men and 59.6 percent for women ( 2001).

61.6 percent of the population speak Spanish, 97.2 percent speak Aymara, Quechua and 0.1 percent. (2001)

71.1 percent of the population have no access to electricity, 72.6 percent have no sanitary facilities ( 2001).

61.8 percent of the total of 4,457 households have a radio, 11.4 percent have a television, 36.3 percent a bicycle, a motorcycle 0.4 percent, 1.8 percent, a car, a refrigerator 0.2 percent and 0.9 percent a telephone. (2001)
