Lake Okataina

The Lake Okataina is the northernmost and largest of four smaller lakes between Lake Rotorua and Lake Tarawera in Bay of Plenty region in the North Island of New Zealand. The other three are the Rotokakahi Lake ( Green Lake ), Lake Tikitapu ( Blue Lake ) and Lake Okareka. All are in the range of the western rim of the caldera Okataina.

Unlike many other lakes, the lake is completely surrounded by forest of native tree species. He has no additions or drain. Perhaps for this reason swayed the height of the water level in the last 30 years by 5 m.

The lake is accessible by road via Hinehopu on the southern shore of Lake Rotoiti. At the end of the street is a large sandy beach, a large grassy area and the privately owned Okataina Lodge.

In the area around the lodge numerous Derby wallabies come before that have been introduced from Australia in the 19th century.
