Career

Lars Rønningen comes from a Ringer family, his father was a wrestler and weightlifter and his older brother by three years Jon Rønningen is two -time Olympic champion. He started as a teenager in 1976 with the rings. First, he was a member of the Ring Sport Club Oslo Bryteklubb (BK), later he moved with his brother to the sports club Kolbotn IL. At a size of 1.53 meters, he had the ideal material for the paper weight, the light test weight class, which had its weight limit at 48 kg body weight. He wrestled exclusively in the Greco- Roman style.

In 1980, his international career began. He was 15 years old junior world champion in Stockholm in the weight class up to 42 kg body weight. A year later, he finished at the Junior World Championship ( Juniors = age group up to 18 years of age), in Vancouver in paper weight the sixth place behind Mark Fuller, USA, Magyatdin Allachwerdijew, Soviet Union, Bratan Zenow, Bulgaria, Bernd Scherer, Germany and Vincenzo Maenza from Italy. How strong this championship was occupied, it can be seen that when these wrestlers in the following years Maenza Olympic champion, Allachwerdijew and Zenow world champion Bernd Scherer Vice-European Champion, Mark Fuller Pan -American champion and Lars Rønningen vice-world champion and double European champion should be the seniors.

The cost of Lars Rønningen in the seniors was a 11th place at the 1981 World Championship in Oslo. He lost there in the paper weight his two fights against Ferenc Seres from Hungary and Salih Bora from Turkey. This was followed by a good 4th place in the Papiergewichtbei still only seventeen years old at the European Championships 1982 in Varna, which he was from Germany behind Vasily Anikin, Soviet Union, Csaba Vadász, Hungary and Totyu Andonow from Bulgaria, but before Markus Scherer.

In 1984, Lars Rønningen first part in the Olympic Games. He started in Los Angeles back in the paper weight, but there was subject to Markus Scherer from Germany ( 4:14 tech. Dots) and against Ikazu Saito from Japan ( 2:14 techn. Dots) and therefore only came to 9th place.

In the next few years, Lars Rønningen improved both in his technical skills as well as in terms of forces. He always created thus better conditions in order to in the following years can mitringen in the world rankings. This was in 1986, where he finished 4th both at the European Championships in Athens, as well as at the World Championships in Budapest. At the European Championships in Athens, he succeeded, among other things a shoulder victory over Markus Scherer, who in 1984 was the silver medalist at the Olympic Games. The battle for 3rd place, however, he lost against Vincenzo Maenza high for points ( 00:14 ). At the World Championships in Budapest, he lost in the pool finale against Bratan Zenow. The battle for 3rd place bout against Reynaldo Jimenez from Cuba.

1987 Lars Rønningen won a first medal at International Veterans Championships. At the 1987 World Championships in Clermont- Ferrand he came in paper weight behind Magyatdin Allachwerdijew and Vincenzo Maenza to 3rd place. This success followed in 1988, the first title win, because he was at home in Kolbotn European champion in paper weight, scoring in the final battle a brief point victory over the Russians Sergei Suvorov. At the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 there were but for Lars Rønningen to sustain a major setback, because he came there after a high point defeat against Vincenzo Maenza ( 0:11 techn. Dots), almost a points victory over Mark Fuller ( 6:4 techn. dots) and a further high point defeat against Bratan Zenow ( 4:16 points ) is not among the top ten wrestlers. Its exact place is not ascertainable.

At the European Championships in 1989 in Oulu, there was hardly any better for him, because he came there flyweight only on the 9th Place. But again he succeeded in the World Cup 1989 in Martigny a great success, because he was there in the paper weight behind Oleg Kucherenko from the USSR vice-champion. But the final against Kucherenko he lost significantly with 3:14 techn. Points.

1990 Lars paused Rønningen in international championships. In 1991, he started only at the World Championships in Varna and lost there bantamweight his first fight. Due to a rule change by the FILA he already retired from it and landed on the 25th place.

In 1992, he then won at the European Championships in Copenhagen again the European title in paper weight. In the final, he defeated his pool while Safar Guliyev from the CIS and in the final of this championship Iliuţă Dăscălescu from Romania. In the same year but failed also his third start in the Olympics to win a medal, because he lost in Barcelona against Oleg Kucherenko, then came to a victory over Masanori Ohashi from Japan and retired after another defeat against Wilber Sánchez from Cuba and came only on the 7th Place.

1993 Lars joined Rønningen then his successful career with a 4th place in the flyweight at the European Championships in Istanbul from. The fight for the bronze medal he lost it against Samvel Danieljan from Russia.
