Las Heras Department

The Department of Las Heras is in the northwest of the province of Mendoza in western Argentina and is one of 18 administrative units in the province. It was named from the Argentine War of Independence, after Juan Gregorio de las Heras (1780-1866), a general.

It is bordered to the north by the province of San Juan, on the east by the department of Lavalle, to the south by the departments Capital, Godoy Cruz and Luján de Cuyo and to the west by Chile.

The capital of the department is Las Heras Las Heras. It is located 1095 km from Buenos Aires.

Geography

The Andes form a natural border between Argentina and Chile. They cover a substantial part of the western side of the department. The Aconcagua, with 6,962 m altitude highest mountain in the Americas, situated on the territory of the department of Las Heras.
