Le Teilleul

Le Teilleul is a commune with 1262 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Manche in Basse-Normandie region. It is the administrative center of the canton of the same name and is part of the Local Government Association Sélune.

Geography

Le Teilleul located in the south of the department of Manche in the Pays de la Baie du Mont -Saint -Michel ( land of the Bay of Mont -Saint -Michel ), 74 kilometers northeast of Rennes and 31 kilometers northeast of Fougères between the neighboring communities of Sainte -Marie -du -Bois in the north and in the south west Heussé. The hamlet Cour de Houessey and Courteille and the pond Etang de Morette belong to the community. Le Teilleul is surrounded by pastures and fields show the typical field boundaries of the Bocage.

History

The place name is derived from the French word tilleul, it means " linden tree".

1793 Le Teilleul received in the course of the French Revolution ( 1789-1799 ) the status of a municipality and in 1801 the right to local self-government.

Most residents had Tilleul 1861, after which the population declined steadily.

Attractions

The church of Saint -Patrice was completed in 1854 according to a plan of 1851. It is held in the nine -Norman style. In 2006 the building was entered in the Register of Monuments historiques additional (historical monuments ). In the church there is a baptismal font from the 15th or 16th century. It consists of granite and wood and was classified in 1975 as a monument historique.
