Legio I Iovia

The Legio I Iovia (also Legio I Iovia Scythica ) was a legion of late ancient Roman army, which was drawn up together with the Legio II Herculia of Diocletian ( 284-305 ) towards the end of the 3rd century AD. The name of the Legion takes on Diocletian's nickname Jovius ( Adjective to Jupiter ) reference. The emblem of the Legion is not known.

The Legion was stationed in Moesia inferior split of the new Roman province of Scythia near the mouth of the Danube. At least parts of the Legion were moved after the death of Diocletian in the castle Dinogetia where brick temple attest their presence.

In the early 5th century, the Legio Prima Iovia was under the command of the Dux Scythiae. The Praefectus legionis and Praefectus ripae lay with her military unit in the garrison Noviodunum ad Istrum ( Isaccea in Romania), the main camp of the Legion. Another Praefectus ripae was with his unit in Accisso (also Castrum Aegyssus, today Tulcea ) stationed. There, they watched as Legio ripariensis ( "Shore Legion" ) on the Danube the boundary to Barbaricum. Another Praefectus ripae the Legio I Iovia was stationed with the Cohors Secunda Herculia musculorum Scythicorum and the fleet in Inplateypegiis, other detachments in Capidava ( Topalu ).
