Leonardo Sandri

Cardinal Leonardo Sandri ( born November 18, 1943 in Buenos Aires, Argentina) is cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

After studying Catholic theology and philosophy Leonardo Sandri received on 2 December 1967 in Buenos Aires, the sacrament of Holy Orders. In 1974 he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See and worked first at the Apostolic Nunciature in Madagascar. Pope Paul VI. gave him on 29 November 1976 honorary title chaplain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ). From 1977 to 1989 Sandri worked in the Vatican Secretariat of State. Pope John Paul II awarded him on June 15, 1989 Title Pontifical honorary prelate. In the same year he was sent as Apostolic Nunciature to the employee in the United States of America.

On August 22, 1991 Sandri was appointed Prefect of the Prefecture of the Papal Household, and on 2 April 1992 to the assessor of the Section for General Affairs in the Secretariat of State.

On 22 July 1997 he was named titular Archbishop of John Paul II Aemona and Apostolic Nuncio to Venezuela. He received his episcopal consecration Cardinal Secretary of State Angelo Sodano on 11 October of the same year; Co-consecrators were Juan Carlos Cardinal Aramburu and Archbishop Giovanni Battista Re.

On 1 May 2000, he was first appointed Apostolic Nuncio in Mexico, however, recalled on 16 September of the same year, as a substitute of the Section for General Affairs in the Vatican Secretariat of State.

Following the announcement of the death of Pope John Paul II on the evening of April 2, 2005 Sandri agreed to the gathered crowd in St. Peter's Square, the De Profundis for the deceased.

On June 9, 2007 Sandri was by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches. The appointment became effective on 1 July 2007.

24 November 2007 it took Benedict XVI. as cardinal deacon with the title Diakonia Santi Biagio e Carlo ai Catinari in the College of Cardinals. In his position as prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, Cardinal Sandri visited several celebrations in the Middle East, including the inauguration of the Maronite Patriarch Béchara Pierre Raï on March 25, 2011. 2012, he became a member of the Congregation for Catholic Education. Following the resignation of Benedict XVI. Cardinal Sandri took part in the conclave in 2013, in which his fellow countryman Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected Pope Francis.

Sandri was a Konventualkaplan h of the Sovereign Order of Malta, and was elevated to the honor and Devotion Grand Cross Bailli 2010.
