Les Écorces

Les Écorces is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Les Écorces is located at 900 m, 4 km south of Maîche and about 13 km north of the town of La Chaux -de-Fonds (air line). The village is located in the Jura, on a hill surrounded by broad plateaux of Maîche.

The area of ​​9:51 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The entire area is occupied by the weakly in relief plateau Maîche, which is on average 880 m. It is mainly consisted of meadow and pasture land, but also has some larger forest areas, especially the Grand Bois in the southwest. The plateau shows no surface watercourses, because the rainwater seeps into the karst underground. On the communal land there are also several sinkholes. History

In the Middle Ages Les Écorces belonged to the rule Maîche. The first houses were grouped around a chapel, which was under the Church of Maîche. The name suggests that the houses with bark (French écorces ) were covered by fir and spruce trees. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France.

Attractions

The village church of Les Écorces was built in 1881 in the Gothic Revival style and has a 47.5 -meter-high bell tower. On an open field south-east of the village is the chapel of Saint -Roch, built in 1868.

Population

With 661 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Les Écorces one of the small communities of the department of Doubs. Once the population has consistently had in the first half of the 20th century in the range from 350 to 420 people, a continuous increase in population was recorded since the early 1970s.

Economy and infrastructure

Les Écorces was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture ( livestock and dairy farming ) and forestry embossed village.
