Lidingö Municipality

Lidingö is a municipality (Swedish kommun ) in Stockholm County and the Swedish historic province of Uppland. The main town is Lidingö.

Geography

Lidingö has an area of 30.1 km ² and 41,636 inhabitants (June 30, 2005). As the name suggests (Swedish ö = island), the municipality lies completely on several islands. The landscape consists mainly of villas and forest. Lidingö is by two bridges, one for pedestrians and one connected to the Lidingöbana as well as to traffic, with the mainland in Stockholm. The connection point of the Lidingöbana to Stockholm is Ropsten.

Economy

Most of the residents work in Stockholm. The suburban railway Lidingöbana is a shuttle train to the Tunnelbana. The largest employer in Lidingö is the community itself Otherwise, approximately 650 people employed at The Linde Group company AGA. AGA primarily manufactures industrial gases and was founded in 1904 on Lidingö.

Attractions

  • Millesgården is an art museum and in the outdoor area and a sculpture park. Lived here until 1931, originally the artist couple Olga and Carl Milles. In 1936, he donated his property ( House, Atelje and garden) to the Swedish people.
  • Elfviks gård is an old mansion at the southwest end of Lidingö. It is now used for meetings and conferences.
  • Fjäderholmarna are a group of islands in the harbor entrance to Stockholm and a popular tourist destination. For a long time the area was a closed military zone and thus the entry was forbidden. After opening to the public the islands for tourists and the inhabitants of Stockholm were opened. Parts of today's attractions are housed in the old underground military facilities. The boats leave from Nybroplan in Stockholm, Nacka and Gåshaga on Lidingö off.

  • Lidingö kyrka The old church Lidingös located on a hill at the end of Kyrkviken ( " Church Bay "). The church is probably on the site of a medieval chapel of St. Anne consecrated wood. In traditions there is the reference to the new building in 1623, which was funded by the lords of the castle of Djursholm and Lidingö, Imperial Council Svante Gustafsson Banér and his wife Ebba grip. 1817 was the owner of Elfvik, the Industrial Lars Fresk build the bell tower.

Events

Every autumn is on Lidingö take a 30- kilometer cross-country race, which bears the name Lidingöloppet. This event has been around since 1965 and belongs to the series of four endurance competitions, which are known as a Swedish classic.
