Location of Lieskau in Salzatal

Lieskau is a place of unity in the community Salzatal Saale district, in Saxony -Anhalt ( Germany ).

Geography

Lieskau is about 4 km west of Halle ( Saale) and borders the district of Halle- Dölau and Dölauer Heath.

History

In 1182, the village as Lezcowe in a deed to the monastery Neuwerk in Halle ( Saale) was first mentioned. The settlement was originally located to the west and is of Slavic origin.

In Lieskau brown coal was mined in the 14th century.

Until the formation of the unified community Salzatal on 1 January 2010 Lieskau was an independent municipality in the administrative community Western Saalkreis with the respective district forest salvation. Last mayor Lieskaus was Harald Schubert.

Culture and sights

Structures

The church was probably built to Lieskau in the second half of the 12th century. The building was not until 1696/1697 a tower, which was increased in 1736. In a fire on February 17, 1734 the church burned down as well as the largest part of the village and had to be replaced. Several modifications followed.
