Ligao

Ligao ( officially: City of Ligao, Filipino: Lungsod ng Ligao ) is a Philippine city in the province of Albay. It has 104 914 inhabitants ( census May 1, 2010 ). The inhabitants call themselves Ligaoeños. Parts of the Mayon Volcano National Park lie within the municipality. A regular rail link between Manila and Ligao City, it is operated by the Philippine National Railways.

History

The name Ligao is derived from the word Ticau from the language of the locals for a once widespread species whose poisonous leaves were used to fish in the rivers and streams. Most Ligaoeños assume, however, that the name was derived from the word Ţicău, which means as much as " take a detour " or " agreements regular way " from the means.

Ligao founded in the 16th century as a small settlement called Cavasi. Due to immigration from the surrounding settlements, the population grew. He subsequently produced power struggles among ambitious and aggressive leaders who divided the settlement. It emerged five parts which were led by the maginoos ( chiefs ). The names of the chiefs were Pagkilatan, Maaban, Sampoñgan, Makabongay and Hokoman. The peace could only be produced again, as the chief Pagkilatan was determined with the consent of the other chiefs, the supreme leader of the entire settlement.

As a barrio of Polangui the town was founded in 1606. 1665 Ligao came to the administrative area of Oas and 1666 was finally independent municipality.
