Tiwi (Albay)

Tiwi is a Philippine municipality in the province of Albay.

History

Before the founding of the church Tiwi by the Spaniards, the area of today's main settlement and the barangays Baybay, Libjo, Cararayan and Naga was still part of the Pacific Ocean and the hills on which are the barangays Bolo and Putsan today was an island. Only by an eruption of the volcano dormant today Malinao this area country and the hill of Bolo and Putsan with the island of Luzon was connected. In 1658 Spanish Franciscan built near the coast north of Malinao a cross. The friars called the place the name of a plant Tigbi occurring there. Later it was Tivi, and finally the present form Tiwi. The settlement was initially a district of Malinao before a formally independent pueblo was in 1696. As a Catholic parish was administered by a secular priest. The parish belonged to the Diocese of Nueva Caceres, now an archdiocese. In their prehistoric settlement had 1105 houses, a parish church, a community- funded primary school and a cemetery outside the city limits. Originally, the residents in the fishing and the production of rice, corn, sugar cane, indigo, fruits and vegetables were active. In addition to these activities in agriculture, they wove cotton and Abakakleider and made ​​pottery.

In Kagnipa, today Baranggay Baybay, are the dilapidated remains of the first built of concrete church named Sinimbahan. It was built by the Franciscans under the pastor of Malinao, Pedro de Brosas. The population had to suffer from the raids of Muslim Moros. Prior to these raids was the market place at the site of today's elementary school in Baybay. To avoid the surprise attack, the market was moved to the southernmost site of the present barangays Baybay. From then on, the Baranggay Baybay Binanwaan was called. The relocation of the market, however, was useless. The marketplace and the settlement was to have enough time to escape in attacks moved to the site of the present barangays Tigbi. Before the attacks of the Moros the Baranggay Baybay was the center for business and trade, as it was easy for the transport of goods across the sea from the islands of Catanduanes, Rapu Rapu and Batan - as well as from the neighboring settlements to reach the mainland.

Attractions

The most important visitor attractions are Hot Springs. However, their popularity declined in recent years, since near a geothermal power plant was built.
