Polangui, Albay

Polangui is a Philippine municipality in the province of Albay. A regular rail link between Manila and Polangui, it is operated by the Philippine National Railways.

History

The community was originally called Binanuaan. It was founded by the monk Baltazar de la Magdalena, along with the baptism of five elderly residents. At this time the village had about 500 inhabitants. This village was situated in a flat area and was exposed to flooding, therefore the inhabitants of the village moved to the present location of the village, which was situated higher later, and therefore was exposed by floods less risk. The name of the township is derived from the name of a species from oyangi that occurred in this area.

1654 the construction of a community church was begun under the monk Juan Bautista, which was completed ten years later. In 1897 the photographer and resident of Polangui Camilo Jacob was executed along with other residents of Bicol. A year later mutinied cited by Don Elias Angeles Civil Guard against the Spaniards. This ended Spanish rule in the Bicol region.
