Prehistory, Roman Empire and early Middle Ages

Neolithic

The earliest settlement of the district left home Hochstetten is probably already back to the Neolithic period. As evidence of early human activities can be considered two stone artefacts. The first is a stone ax from amphibolite, which was found in 1985 in high Stetten. 1993 another stone ax of greenish Silitstein was found in the east of the left Heimer district. Especially it is its origin. This rock type is originally from the southern Black Forest or the Slate Mountains. However, hatchets made of stone are not the only witnesses of the Neolithic. From the lakes pipes and Streitköpfle we know by the tireless collecting performance by F. Wagner, today a lot of antler picks and other bony artifacts.

Bronze age

Early Bronze Age

From the Bronze Age, there is still, unfortunately, only a few finds. Including a Randleistenbeil of bronze, which was found in the west Hardt forest left home. The piece is to be considered today in the permanent exhibition of the Badische Landesmuseum.

Late Bronze Age / Urnfield

From typical of the Urnfield vases head pins we know two pieces from the quarry Rohrköpfle.

Iron Age

A special piece from the late pre-Roman Iron Age represents a decorated belt hook of bronze, which was a part of Celtic Woman costume.

Roman Empire

So far, the legacies confined to the district left home Hochstetten on single or loss finds. From the Roman period, however, we can demonstrate traces of settlements and other structures for the first time. So runs east of the double municipality in Hardt forest in a north -south axis of a Roman road. It is a still recognizable in the terrain wall of earth and gravel, which have up to 50 cm high is obtained. Causes was the construction of this road 74 AD by Emperor Vespasian. The road led from Offenburg, about Ladenburg / Lopodunum to Mainz / Mogontiacum, which was the capital of the province of Germania Superior.

The Roman presence in the reign of Vespasian occupied beside the Roman road, a denarius with his portrait from the quarry Rohrköpfle. In addition to other 96 coins here were Roman fibulae (eg knee fibula ), a golden earring, finger ring fragments in part with inscription, and several bronze vessels. Among a saucepan, a bowl and a Hemmoorer bucket.

North of the village high Stetten, under today's industrial areas, right on the Gestadtekante discovered A. Bonnet 1898 a small settlement of four huts, which was excavated in 1898-1900. After Bonet it involves huts that had been dug partially into the ground and reached a size of up to 3.80 mx 2.10 m. The pottery finds attest to a long settlement period of the settlement, which probably related to its convenient location. It is possible that the settlement was a Fährübergang over the Rhine controlled, came over the pottery from Rheinzabern ( Tabernae ) into the right bank of the Rhine.

Early Middle Ages

Latest findings show that this small settlement has apparently continued to play an important role in the early Middle Ages. After a small hiatus after the departure of the Romans in the 4th century, the settlement in the late 7th century, seems to have been repopulated. Bear witness of the early pieces older yellow wheel made pottery, a type of ceramic that left and right of the Rhine, and is spread over the central Neckar region. The feintonige nature, as well as certain designs of high Stettener pieces point to an origin of pottery in northern Alsace. Further evidence of post-classical colonization brought in addition to these findings the older yellow wheel made pottery, a silver denarius of Emperor Louis the Pious, the son and successor of Charlemagne. This Denartyp was 822 AD by Ludwig introduced the Pious, who was forced by increasingly frequent forgeries discredited the type preceded with multiline Münzstättennamen and imperial titulary. In all likelihood, the denar comes from the mint of Dorestad an important Carolingian trade center in the Northern Netherlands. He is the first relevant Fund on the Upper Rhine. An excavation of the Regional Council of Karlsruhe ( Referates 26, Archaeological Monuments and Sites) in 2008 gave additional building floor plans and reinforced the suspicion of a medieval settlement.

And in Rohrköpfle there were some impressive pieces from the early Middle Ages. Including parts of Pferdezaumzeug as two oblique edge strap iron with fine Tauschierungen of silver. Here also another silver denarius was recovered from the Cologne coin.
