List of extinct birds

The Red List of Threatened Species 2012, the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources lists 130 bird species that have become extinct worldwide by the year 1500. In addition, an unknown number of Vogeltaxa applies extinct as missing or probably because they were no longer detected either for decades or their habitat is damaged so badly that another survival seems unlikely. The year 1500 applies to the IUCN as a key year because from this point on the discovery and colonization of the remotest corner of the earth has been initiated by the Europeans and both the human and faunenfremde animal species, such as cats and rats, caused a mass extinction of many Vogeltaxa. In the scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences published calculations showed that, nowadays, about twelve percent of all bird species threatened with extinction and another twelve percent are at risk. Based on the available data, the researchers assume that at the end of the 21st century at least ten bird species are extinct each year. Especially endemic species on remote islands are affected by extinction. This situation can be exemplified in Hawaii, where initially 30 percent of the now-vanished species lived. The stock on the relatively small island of Guam has been hit hard by the appearance of the brown tree snake. Yet supposedly extinct bird species are rediscovered from time to time. In Europe in historical times only a kind of died out, the Great Auk.
