The Vladivostok was known by a spectacular rescue of the trapped in Antarctic pack ice polar research vessel Mikhail Somov world. The ship had crossed for the first icebreaker in the maritime history of the equator. The rescue expedition took place in July 1985, after the Mikhail Somov was already frozen five months, the crew and the researchers were able to be supplied in the polar night only from helicopters.
