List of IOC country codes

The list of Olympic team abbreviation contains 241 entries, 204 of which are used currently. The International Olympic Committee (IOC ) used for each National Olympic Committee (NOC ) one, three letter, abbreviation.

Some shortcuts of the IOC are not consistent with the ISO3166 -1 alpha -3 ( country code ) of the ISO. The abbreviations of the IOC are not binding on the international sports federations. So are other abbreviations used for some teams than at the Olympics, for example, at the Commonwealth Games or the World Cup by FIFA, FINA and / or IAAF.

History

At the Winter Games of 1956 and the Summer Games of 1960 three-letter codes were for the first time in the official reports for the participating teams and for each NOC used. First, these abbreviations were based on the respective national language of the host (eg, GIA for Japan comes from the Italian name for Japan: Giappone since the Winter Games of 1956 and the Summer Games were held in 1960 in Italy) or were derived from the French name ( eg, COR for Korea, French: Corée ).

At the Winter Games of 1972, the most abbreviations were standardized. But there were always changes in the following years. Political changes led over the years to also change the shortcuts, such as after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, after the disintegration of Yugoslavia, after the German reunification or for Malawi, Libya, Myanmar and Sudan.
