List of political parties in the United Kingdom

Before the mid- 19th century British politics was dominated by the Whigs and the Tories. They were not political parties in the modern sense, but rather loose alliances of interest groups and individuals. The Whigs identified with the new emerging industry, while the Tories were close to the nobility and the Church of England.

Over time, the Whigs became the Liberal Party, the Tories for the Conservative Party. These two parties dominated politics until the 1920s, when the Liberal Party suffered a marked loss of meaning and many members leaked from the party. The role as the principal competitor of the Conservatives, the Labour Party took a now, an alliance between trade unions and various socialist groups.

To date, the Conservatives and Labour to dominate British politics, triggering each other off in the government. Lately, the resulting from the Liberal Party Liberal Democrats have become established as the third force voters with a share of around 20 % and improves their election results significantly. Due to the majority voting smaller parties are greatly disadvantaged. The small parties represented in the House have a strong regional presence.
