Lombez

Lombez ( Gascon: Lombers ) is a commune with 1966 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the southwest of the country. It belongs to the Région Midi -Pyrénées and Gers department, located in the district also. Lombez is the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the Canton of Lombez. The inhabitants are called Lombéziennes.

Geography

Lombez is located about 32 kilometers south-east of Auch and about 45.5 km west-southwest of Toulouse. Through the city flows the save.

History

Historically, the place is detected as Lombarium or Lomberium, the present name of the place since the reign of the Counts of Comminges. Lombez was the capital of the former province Savès.

793 Here the Benedictine Abbey of Notre-Dame was built. Pope John XXII. advised the suffragan Lombez a ( Diocese Lombez ). The bishopric existed until 1801.
