Lorenzo Ghielmi

Lorenzo Ghielmi ( born September 1, 1959 in Milan, Italy ) is an Italian organist, harpsichordist, conductor and musicologist.

Life

Ghielmi studied organ, harpsichord and piano playing, and completed his studies at the Schola Cantorum in Basel under Jean- Claude Zehnder. Just as a student of Luigi Ferdinando Tagliavini, he devoted himself to the Italian organ music.

Ghielmi teaches at the Accademia Internazionale della Musica in Milan, at the Leopold Mozart Centre in Augsburg and since 2006 at the Schola Cantorum in Basel. He was some time each guest professor at the Musikhochschule Trossingen and at the Musikhochschule Lübeck and gave master classes at the Summer Academy Haarlem in the Netherlands and at the Mozarteum in Salzburg.

At the Basilica di San Simpliciano in Milan Ghielmi is titular organist at the in the years 1990/1991 newly built Ahrend organ. During construction of the Mascioni organ in the Cathedral of Tokyo, he was the principal adviser.

Even as a player of the fortepiano occurs Ghielmi in appearance. Sometimes he makes music with the viola da gamba player Vittorio Ghielmi, his brother. Ghielmi is the founder and director of the ensemble La Divina armonia ( The Divine Harmony ). Concert tours have taken him so far through Europe, Japan and the United States.

Ghielmi has long been a jury member at a variety of organ competitions, such as in Bruges, Chartres, Freiberg, Lausanne, Maastricht, Nuremberg, Toulouse and Tokyo.

Depending on a sound recording and a book Ghielmis deal specifically with the organ works of Nicolaus Bruhns. Furthermore Ghielmi has published scientific studies on various Milanese composer as well as scores of Girolamo Frescobaldi. Other publications related to the organ building of the 16th and 17th century and the interpretation of the work of Johann Sebastian Bach. He has made to the rediscovery and perform performance of the St. John Passion by Francesco Feo in 2009 Special Merit.
