The instrumental piece was composed by Victor Young and appeared in 1945 as part of the soundtrack. The play was nominated for an Oscar in 1946. Edward Heyman wrote the words to the song.

Versions of the piece with vocals were published by numerous artists, most famously the versions are by Dick Haymes (1946 ), Ketty Lester (1962 ), Elvis Presley (1966) and Alison Moyet (1987). Dick Haymes ' version for Decca Records became a hit in the United States. The version of Ketty Lester reached number 6 in 1962 the then U.S. charts and sold a million times in 1962. This version was used in 1986 by David Lynch for his film Blue Velvet and also 2012 by Andrew Dominik for the thriller Killing Them Softly. Alison Moyets version reached number 4 in the UK 1987 UK Top 40
