Lower Lusatian Ridge Nature Park

Old Luckauer Str 1 15926 Luckau, OT Drehna

The Nature Park of Lower Landrücken takes 580 km ² in area a center place among the eleven nature parks in Brandenburg. The park is located west of the Spreewald in Lower Lusatia. To the east it is bounded approximately on a line of cities Luckau and Calau, north through the course of the river Dahme, to the west it extends to just before the town of Dahme and south to Sonnenwalde shortly before Finsterwalde. More famous places in the natural park are Luckau and Drehna.

The low range of hills Landrücken emerged as typical terminal moraine already at the end of the last glacial period, the Saale ice age. The north-west running Baruth glacial valley cut a striking geological character called Lusatian border wall in the country back, drops steeply for Brandenburg ratios for glacial valley, and forms a rich source area. To the north- west is the Lower Landrücken, interrupted by the Dahme Valley, continued in the lower flaming.

This park has its very own characteristics, which is determined by a vast lunar landscape with giant left open mines - a legacy of the former coal mining, which has been set to 1980. This mining landscapes are located in the park and take a nearly 7400 hectares of the total area.

In contrast to the barren sandy plains and canyons in the center there are around green meadows, fields, fish ponds, a Slavic castle, historic village centers, mansions and rural parks in a lovely landscape. Here in the north dominates agriculture, with extensive agricultural areas and in the South a large closed forest area: the Roch Auer Heide, the home to the boreal owl, among other now rare animals, which serves as the logo of the Natural Park.

Even at first glance to be repulsive moonscape of former opencast mine has a special meaning, which is only revealed at second glance for nature lovers and even more for nature conservation. Some areas remained more than two decades without any human intervention, thus arisen unique habitats. With the rise of the groundwater and partly via a water supply by the Spree form extensive wetlands and lakes, for example, the future 700 -acre Schlabendorfer lake. The water will cover a total area of approximately 1,400 acres in the final stages of development.

The total natural water landscapes and succession areas such as the approximately 50 -acre dunes on Schlabendorfer lake bring a plant and animal world shows that might arise in Germany than in any other environment like this: In yet sparse vegetation specialists conquer as Wiener tiger beetles, sand cricket, earwig, centrifugal wasp, Blue -winged grasshopper and Rotbauchunke new habitats; Ringed Plover, Wheatear, lapwing, variety of duck species and the largest colony of black-headed gulls Brandenburg already inhabit.

Mid-year 2003, there were about 50 kilometers bike-tours through the former mining areas that are amazing with lichens, mosses, shrubs and giant horsetails fast green.

A very similar natural process, after coal, developed at the beginning of the third millennium south of Finsterwalde in the emerging natural paradise green house, which also belongs geologically to the low Landrücken, but not belonging to nature park. Thus the natural process in this new natural paradise can not be but eventually disturbed by too much human intervention, buys the Wildlife Protection Society of Brandenburg since 2003, large areas in the former mining Kleinleipisch on. The end of 2004 should be 1400 and 2007 acres 2000 acres owned by the conservationists.
