Geography

The Loswa originates on the eastern flank of here about 1200 m high northern Urals Comb Pojassowy Kamen ( Поясовый Камень ) at about 800 m above sea level. NN. Next she wraps around - always on the territory of Sverdlovsk Oblast - first some eastern foothills of the Urals, then in a south-easterly direction through the sparsely populated wetlands of the western part of the West Siberian Plain, before finally, 12 km north of the urban-type settlement ( and Rajonverwaltungszentrum ) Gari with to unite the Sos'va to Tavda (g at 56 m. NN ).

The catchment area of 17,800 km ² comprises Loswa. In Schaburowo, about 35 km from the mouth, the average discharge is 132 m³ / s ( minimum in March with 17.5 m³ / s, maximum in June with 403 m³ / s). In the lower reaches of the river is about 80 m wide, 2.5 m deep, the flow velocity is 0.5 m / s The most important tributary is from the right Ivdel ( Ивдель ).

Economy and Transport

In the middle reaches of the river are a few kilometers west of the city Ivdel and the settlement Polunotschnoje. Here is approaching the railway Serow - Ivdel - Polunotschnoje the river, and the distance Ivdel - Priobje crosses him. The areas on the upper and lower reaches of the Loswa are against traffic- virtually untapped. However, there is a project, the route from Polunotschnoje first along the north Loswa extended in order to finally reach along the eastern edge Ural, west of the Ob, the so-called Arctic Circle railway near Labytnangi.

The Loswa is from the mouth of the navigable Ivdel ( near the town Ivdel ), but currently only from the settlement Ponil ( at confluence of the eponymous smaller tributary ), 219 km upstream of the mouth, run as inland waterways.

Parts of the catchment area of the Loswa played a significant role in the timber industry, in which initially also Gulag prisoners were used since the 1930er/1950er years. For timber removal (750 mm) were built by several hundred kilometers long where today virtually roadless area narrow gauge railway networks. On them the wood was transported for further transport to the Loswa to the jetties, as Chorpija, Nowoschipitschny, Polunotschnoje, Ponil or Nowy Wagil. During the Russian economic crisis of the 1990s, the timber industry came to a standstill in many places, many narrow gauge railways were shut down or dismantled.
