Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra

The Philharmonic Orchestra of Luxembourg (French: Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, OPL ) is the national orchestra of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. It has its headquarters on the Kirchberg plateau, opened in 2005, newly built Philharmonie Luxembourg Luxembourg City. Past Performances took place in the " Grand Théâtre de la Ville de Luxembourg " and the " Conservatoire de Luxembourg".

History

The orchestra was founded in 1933 as the resident orchestra of the radio station RTL radio called Grand orchester symphonique de RTL. The Luxembourg Henri Pensis was the founder and first musical director of the orchestra. 1939 Pensis went into exile in the United States, the orchestra was disbanded. The new start as a small entertainment orchestra in 1945 followed in 1946 by the resumption of serious music after Pensis from the United States had returned.

The RTL decided in 1996 to discontinue the contract with the orchestra. The Luxembourg Government established the Henri- Pensis Foundation, so the orchestra could continue. Since 1996 the orchestra has the new name.

The Orchestra is financially supported by Ministry of Culture of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and from Luxembourg city. In addition, the OPL works with partners and sponsors.

Orchestra

The orchestra is currently (as of January 2013) of 98 permanent musicians. These come from about 20 countries. About two -thirds of the musicians come from Luxembourg and the neighboring countries of France, Germany and Belgium.

Repertoire

The focus of the repertoire of the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg (OPL ) is on the concert literature of the Classical and Romantic periods. The orchestra performs particularly intense but also works of the 20th century and the 21st century. With the OPL a complete recording of orchestral works by Iannis Xenakis was born. The orchestra led to, among other works of Bernd Alois Zimmermann, Arthur Honegger, Ivo Malec, Hugues Dufourt, Toshio Hosokawa, Klaus Huber, Helmut Lachenmann, Georges Lentz, Philippe Gaubert and Gabriel Pierné.

The orchestra regularly takes part in opera productions at the Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg. Other activities include film shows as " live cinema " in Working Together with the Cinematheque de la Ville de Luxembourg and the " Pops at the Phil " concerts, where the orchestra accompanied, among other artists, such as Patti Austin, Dionne Warwick, Maurane and Angélique Kidjo.

With the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg (OPL ) are about twenty CD releases. The concerts of the OPL are regularly transferred from the Luxembourg radio station Radio 100.7 and broadcast internationally over the network of the European Broadcasting Union ( EBU).
