Lyuben Berov

Liuben Borisov Berov (Bulgarian: Любен Беров; born October 6, 1925 in Sofia, † December 7, 2006 in Sofia) was a Bulgarian economist, politician and Prime Minister.

Study and career

Berov graduated in Economics at the Kliment of Ohrid - Sofia University, from which he graduated in 1949 with the graduation.

, He became first assistant professor at the Karl Marx Institute of Economics in Sofia, which appointed him in 1962 to Associate Professor (Associate Professor ). In the course of his teaching, he was also Head of Department and Vice Dean of the Institute.

In 1971 he is appointed as a full professor at this institute. From 1971 to 1976 he finally was then dean of the Karl Marx Institute. 1976 also Philosphia Doctor ( Ph. D. ), he was awarded.

1985 he was appointed professor at the Institute of Balkan Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. At the same time he was a visiting professor of the local Economic Institute. 1997 he was appointed the Academy of Sciences corresponding member.

Political career and Prime Minister

Berov began his political career in 1990 after the collapse of the communist government of Todor Zhivkov. First, he was economic advisor to President Zhelev Schelju.

This then appointed him on 30 December 1992 as the successor of Filip Dimitrov to the Prime Minister. As such, he formed a reigning until October 17, 1994 coalition government with the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, in particular, represents the Turkish minority in Bulgaria. Between December 1992 and June 1993 he also took over the post of Foreign Minister.

During his tenure, he also signed an initial agreement with the then European Community (EC) as a first step on the path of Bulgaria into the European Union.

Subsequent offices

Following his political career, he was from 1995 to 1997 Member of the Board of Agriculture credit AG. At times, he was also chairman of the 1996 Plenary Council of the Bulgarian - Russian Investment Bank. In 1997 he was first chairman of the agricultural credit AG and 1998, the agricultural product AG.
