The M1 motorway (English for, M1 ') connects the two largest cities of Ireland, the Irish capital Dublin with Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland. The highway is 72 km long; their last section of 16.3 km was opened on 27 June 2003.

The removal of the old N1 to the standard of a modern highway has cost about 700 million euros. The European Union has contributed 270 million euros to the construction costs. The traffic volume is up to 68,000 vehicles per day on the bypass of the Dublin airport.

The expansion of the highway was not only necessary to maintain traffic flow. It came on the N1 also to many accidents between vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, which occur through the equalization of the traffic situation now rare. Also the many property driveways on the N1 had greatly increased the risk of accidents on the busy route.
