Manuel Gonçalves Cerejeira

Manuel Gonçalves Cardinal Cerejeira ( born November 19, 1888 in Lousado, Portugal, † August 2, 1977 in Lisbon ) was Archbishop and Patriarch of Lisbon.

Life

Manuel Gonçalves Cerejeira was educated at the Seminary of Braga and at the Theological Faculty of the University of Coimbra. On April 1, 1911, he received the Sacrament of Holy Orders, and then worked as a university lecturer in Coimbra.

1928 Manuel Gonçalves Cerejeira was appointed Titular Archbishop of Mitylene and auxiliary bishop of Lisbon. He received on 17 June 1928, the consecration of the Bishop of Coimbra, Manuel Luís Coelho da Silva. A year later he was appointed by Pope Pius XI. Archbishop and Patriarch of Lisbon and took him on 19 December 1929 with only 41 years, as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santi Marcellino e Pietro in the College of Cardinals to.

As papal legate he represented abroad both Pope Pius XI. and the popes Pius XII. and John XXIII. at several important occasions. So he consecrated 1944, the Cathedral of Lourenço Marques in Mozambique and led the 1952 celebration of the fourth centenary anniversary of the death of St. Francis Xavier in Goa, India. In 1960 he was at the head of the Pontifical delegation that traveled to the inauguration of the new Brazilian capital Brasília to South America. In 1961 he was serving as the senior Cardinal Priest Cardinal Proto priest.

Manuel Gonçalves Cerejeira died on August 2, 1977 in Lisbon and found the tomb of the Patriarch Church of São Vicente de Fora his final resting place. He was the last surviving cardinal by Pope Pius XI. had been appointed.
