Marian Kasprzyk

Marian Kasprzyk ( born September 22, 1939 in Koloman near Kielce, Poland ) is a retired Polish boxer. He was Olympic champion in 1964 in Tokyo at welterweight.

Career

Marian Kasprzyk began as a teenager in 1955 at the sports club Sparta Ziebice with the boxes. Throughout his career, he started also for Nysy Kłodzko, BBTS Bielsko- Biała, Gornik Wesola and Gornik Pszow. He developed very quickly and started first time in 1960 at the Polish Championship in the Welterweight. He met in the quarter- finals on Jerzy Kulej, the later Olympic champion, he was defeated by the on points.

However, in the course preparing for the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960 he persuaded the coach of the Polish boxer Feliks tribe so much that it was used in place of Kulej in Rome in the Light Welterweight. In Rome he triumphed over Carmelo Garcia from Spain by KO in the 1st round and György Pal of Hungary on points. In the quarterfinals, he met the Soviet Olympic champion of 1956, the exceptional artist Vladimir Jengibarjan and brought the feat to beat this on points. He was in the semi-finals due to an injury no longer compete against William Quartey of Ghana and therefore had to settle for the bronze medal.

In the Polish Championship in 1961 Marian Kasprzyk lost the light welterweight in the semifinals again against Jerzy Kulej. Nevertheless, it was used again this year at the European Championships in Belgrade. After point victories over Rupert King from Austria Gerhard and Dieter from the Federal Republic of Germany was defeated there in the semi-final against Aloizs Tumiņš from the Soviet Union on points and won a bronze medal again.

Marian Kasprzyk afforded after some Undiszipliniertheiten and it was banned by the Polish Boxing Association for two years. But in 1964 he was at the Polish Championship in the last race. But he lost the welterweight already in the second round against Leszek Drogosz. But up to the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964, he brought in such a good shape that he again was preferred to his Polish opponent in these games. In Tokyo, he punched in the welterweight and justified the confidence placed in him completely. However, he was lucky that he was awarded from Chile in his first fight a narrow 3-2 point victory over Miguel Villugron. In the next few battles he won over Siriru Alipala from Nigeria, Kichijiro Hamada of Japan and Silvano Bertini of Italy on points, with the victory over Bertini was also very scarce. In the final Marian Kasprzyk met the experienced Soviet Starter Richardas Tamulis, whom he defeated 4-1 judges' votes and thus Olympic champion.

Marian Kasprzyk was only 1.69 m tall, with a mustache and was very similar in style to three times the Hungarian Olympic champion Laszlo Papp. He was therefore referred to by his fans as the Polish Polski Papp. Throughout his career, he never succeeded to become Polish Champion. After the Polish Championships 1964 he launched namely only in the Polish Championships in 1970. He reached this welterweight also the final, was disqualified there fighting against the young man Zbigniew Zakrzewski unclean because of fighting.

Previously, he was, however, in 1968, again at the Olympic Games at the start. In Mexico City, however, he already defeated in the first round against the Americans Armando Munoz on points and was eliminated early.

At the national level Marian Kasprzyk boxed until 1976 on. It was at this time but already active as a boxing coach. Until his retirement, he held that post in the clubs Gornik Knurow, Gornik Wesola, Gornik Pszow and BBTS Bielko -Biala very successful. In 1977 he participated in the feature film " Bokser " together with Jerzy Kulej.

Marian Kasprzyk played a total of 270 fights, of which he won 232. 10 he boxed a draw and 28 fights he lost.
