Mariinsky Posad
Mariinsky Posad (Russian Мариинский Посад, scientific transliteration Mariinsky Posad; Chuvash Сĕнтĕрвăрри, transliteration Sĕntĕrvărri; Sundyr to 1856, Russ Сундырь ) is a Russian city in the Autonomous Republic of Chuvashia within the Volga Federal District. It is the administrative seat of the Mariinsky Posad Rajons and has 9088 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ). Frequently, the city is only shortened Marpossad ( Марпосад ) called.
Geography
The city is situated on the right bank of the Kuibyshev reservoir at the mouth of the river Sundyrka, about 800 km east of Moscow and 28 km east of the capital of Republic of Cheboksary. Nearest city is Novocheboksarsk, approximately 30 km west of Marpossad away.
History
The village Sundyr was first mentioned in 1620 and got its name after today Sundyrka said river as it flows into the Volga. His name is pre- Chuvash origin and probably means " gorge, flowing in the water." 1856, the settlement was renamed at the instigation of the local merchants by a ukase of Alexander II after Empress Maria Alexandrovna in Mariinsky Posad. At the same time the city received city rights.

Economy and Transport
In the city there are, inter alia, building materials, machinery and food industries as well as cable plant. Mariinsky Posad also has a river port on the Volga.

Other attractions in the town include, inter alia, the Trinity Church ( Троицкий собор, 1775 1903 modified by cross ) and the Church of Our Lady of Kazan ( Казанская церковь, 1761; 1889 extended).
