Marsoulas

Marsoulas is a small French village with 126 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Haute- Garonne in the Région Midi -Pyrénées.

Location

Marsoulas is located on the northern edge of the French Pyrenees; the nearest large town, Salies- du-Salat is located about 2.5 kilometers to the west; The nearest city is Saint- Gaudens - it is located about 29 km ( driving distance ) to the west.

Demographics

In the first census in France in 1793, the city had 137 inhabitants; the maximum population of 285 was reached in 1885.

Economy

In Marsoulas has always been agriculture - especially dairy and pasture management - operated; the forestry plays a role in the economic life of the village. Towards the end of the 20th century, some houses have been converted into apartments.

History

Information about the history of Marsoulas are not available. Located on the outskirts Cave with its prehistoric artifacts can, however, close to a long time of human activity in this area. On June 10, 1944 German troops of the 2nd SS Panzer Division directed "Das Reich" - in retaliation for a previous attack of the French Resistance - a massacre of the civilian population, in which 28 people, including a three- month-old infant, were killed.

Attractions

Besides the beautiful scenic setting, ideal for hiking, the place has no sights. The Cave of Marsoulas is closed to visitors.
