Saint-Martory

Saint- Martory is a commune with 896 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Haute- Garonne and the Région Midi -Pyrénées in the historical region of Comminges. The village was part of the Commandery of Knights Templar de Montsaunès Order. The inhabitants are called Saint- Martoryens, Saint- Martoryennes. Since 1962 the population of the municipality went from 1066 to the present state back.

Geography

The town is located 70 km south-west of Toulouse and 60 km from the French-Spanish border. The historic castle stands on the left bank of the Garonne, at the foot of the cliff of l' Escalère. The town itself was built on the right bank on a residual soil ( alluvial ) of the river. The closest are the Autoroute A64 and the former Route nationale 117, both from Bayonne to Toulouse leader. The railway station is also called Saint- Martory.

Attractions

  • In the Grotte de Tourasse exposed 1891/92, prehistoric artifacts were found. The French archaeologist Gabriel de Mortillet (1821-1898) gave the name Tourassien (now called Azilian ) to this locality the period between the Magdalenian and the Neolithic (New Stone Age ).
  • The obvious Grotte de Montconfort, with Paleolithic ( Old Stone Age ) finds, counts since 1993 as a monument historique.
  • The town is the starting point of the irrigation channel Canal de Saint- Martory.
  • The road bridge Pont de Saint- Martory over the Garonne from the year 1724. This bridge and the two associated triumphal arches ( Porte du Pont and Porte de Ville), created by Antoine d' Mégret Étigny are historiques Monuments since 1950.
  • The Montpezat family, Counts of Comminges, built in Saint- Martory two castles, one in the 11th century on the Montpezat Hill, the other in the Renaissance on the right bank ( this is a monument historique since 1993).
  • Next to the church Saint- Martory is the menhir Peyro - Hitto ( Monument historique since 1913).
  • The old police building shows architecture of the 12th and 13th century and since 1927 also a monument historique.

The French speleologist ( cavers ) and writer Norbert Casteret ( 1897-1987 ), discoverer of the Trou du Toro, the Garonne source, was born here, as the Franco- Mexican Industrial Ernesto Pugibert ( 1853-1915 ), who for a significant contribution technical modernization of Mexico made ​​.
