Marttila

Marttila [ mɑrt ilɑ ː ] (Swedish: S: t Mårtens ) is a municipality in south-western Finland with 2017 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). It is located in the countryside Varsinais- Suomi on river Paimionjoki about 40 kilometers northeast of Turku. The historical trade route between Turku and Häme crossed the community as well as now, the state road 10 from Turku to Hämeenlinna.

The first mention of Marttila dates from the year 1409. Named is the church after St. Martin of Tours, dedicated to the church. The saint is also depicted in the coat of arms of the municipality. 1599 took place in Marttila a battle between the future Swedish king Charles IX. and supporters of deposed King Sigismund III. Wasa instead. 1824 was carried out the last peace temporal death sentence in Finland Marttila what today is a memorial.

The landscape of Marttila is typical of Varsinais -Suomi: The valley of the Paimionjoki is used for agriculture, at the edge of the village there are more forests and wetlands.
