Merzenich

Merzenich is a town in North Rhine -Westphalia, Germany and belongs to the district of Düren. The town has 6,963 inhabitants Merzenich (31 December 2006 ), the entire community 9855 (31 December 2008 ). Since 1998, this number is approximately constant after it had been twice increased by more than 10 % per decade.

Geography

Geographical Location

Merzenich is located on the eastern outskirts of Düren in the Lower Rhine Basin and is drained by Elle brook. Just north is the brown coal open pit Hambach, which advances with the relocation of the A 4 and the resettlement of the village Morschenich in the northern municipality.

The municipality has been awarded with certificate of the District President of Cologne on 24 October 1975, the right to bear a coat of arms.

Blazon: " In red a golden (yellow ) double-headed eagle surmounted by a continuous vierlätzigen, golden ( yellow ) Tournament collar. "

The coat of arms is based on a seal of 1447, which showed only the double eagle. The tournament collar comes from the men Stach from Golzheim and was added later. The four bibs represent the districts of Alt- Merzenich, Girbelsrath, Golzheim and Morschenich.

History

The name of the place is of Martiniacum, a compound of the Latin personal name Martin [i ] us and the Celtic suffix - ( i) acum (fr ), ie "home of Martinus ' derived. It is first mentioned Merzenich in 1225 in a charter of Count Otto von Neuenahr. In the village there was a castle that is completely gone except for a few ditches. In the 19th century the castle fell into disrepair and was not rebuilt.

In the synopses of the Archbishops of Cologne Golzheim is mentioned for the first time on 28 November 1015. 1382 the village Gerbätzräude ( Girbelsrath ) to the Archbishop of Cologne was ceded. Morsaz ( Morschenich ) was first mentioned in 1158. There were also 1939 to 1955 a large-scale test facility in which they tried to break down brown coal in underground mines.

Structures

The landmark of the place Merzenich, the old Catholic parish church, consisting of a formed in the high Gothic tower and a late Gothic nave, is first mentioned in 1300. The present parish church of St. Lawrence was built in 1900. The spire was destroyed in the Second World War and never rebuilt.

Another Merzenicher landmark is the old, renovated water tower, which was built in 1608 and until the 20th century was a windmill. Today it is used for cultural events.

Early 1970s was a great commercial area with Girbelsrath. There is the J. & W. Stollenwerk oHG, one of the biggest canned food manufacturer in Germany, resident. Traffic

From 1908 to 1963 Merzenich was developed by a small train and tram Düren circular path. The railway ran from Düren Merzenich, Noervenich and Zuelpich after Embken.
