Meximieux

Meximieux is a municipality with 7253 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Ain ​​, in the Rhône -Alpes. Administratively it is part of the arrondissement Bourg -en- Bresse and is capital of the canton Meximieux. She is also a member of the Association of Local Authorities Plaine de l' Ain.

Geography

Meximieux is in the countryside Côtière south of the Dombes, around 35 kilometers north-east of Lyon. In the east the territory extends close up to the river Ain.

History

The town already existed in the Gallo -Roman period, the former name was Maximiacus. At the beginning of the modern era he belonged to Savoy until it was handed over to France in 1601.
