Michael Moore (saxophonist and clarinetist)

Michael Moore ( born December 4, 1954 in Arcata, California ) is a North American jazz musician (clarinet, saxophone and composition ), who lives since 1982 in the Netherlands and one of the representatives of the Modern Creative style.

Life and work

The son of a semi-professional musician, Moore was raised in California. After the baseline to the Humboldt State University, he attended the New England Conservatory of Music, where he earned his degree at Jaki Byard and Gunther Schuller (1977). There, he met Marty Ehrlich. Then he played a lot with theater and dance groups. In 1982 he moved to Amsterdam, where he became a member of Misha Mengelberg's ICP Orchestra, and is to this day. He also was a member of George Gräwe pit orchestra sound.

1992 Moore submitted his first album; especially with the album Chicoutimi (1994 ), he was recognized as a composer. The drums loose trio this CD ( Fred Hersch, piano, and Mark Helias, bass) was inspired by the duo of Lee Konitz and Gil Evans, but also recalls the trio of Jimmy Giuffre in the early 1960s. With Jewels and Binoculars ( a trio with bassist Lindsey Horner and drummer Michael Vatcher ) he devoted himself early songs of Bob Dylan. Beyond the ICP Orchestra Moore is probably best known as part of the trio Clusone 3, which he formed with cellist Ernst Reijseger and drummer Han Bennink. The trio was initially established for a single appearance at the festival in Clusone, but then remained for many years for numerous appearances and six CDs, including a free interpreted with Irving Berlin compositions together. He also played with Available Jelly and Gerry Hemingway ( Demon Chaser 1993), Myra Melford, Simon Nabatov, Franky Douglas, Yo -Yo Ma, Maarten Altena, Achim Kaufmann, Sean Bergin and Marilyn Crispell.

In 1991 he founded the label Ramboy Records to document his music better; there are so far 22 publications before (August 2006).

Awards

1986 Moore received the prestigious Boy Edgar Prize. Between 2000 and 2002 he was awarded annually by Downbeat as the best clarinetist.
