Mieczysław Halka Ledóchowski

Mieczysław Halka Cardinal Ledochowski ( born October 29, 1822 in Gorki ( Diocese of Sandomierz in Poland); † July 22, 1902 in Rome) was archbishop of Gniezno and Poznań, Primate of Poland and later became a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

On July 13, 1845 Ledóchowski received the sacrament of Holy Orders. 1861 Pius IX appointed him. September 30, Titular Archbishop of Thebes and on October 1, Apostolic Nuncio to Belgium. The episcopal ordination he received on November 3, by Cardinal Camillo di Pietro; Mitkonsekretoren were the Archbishops Curia Salvatore Nobili Vitelleschi and Alessandro Franchi.

On January 8, 1866, he was named by Pope Pius IX. Archbishop of Gniezno and Poznań. Because of his steadfast refusal to the newly introduced pulpit paragraphs to follow during the Kulturkampf in Prussia, he was imprisoned by Prussian authorities two years in Ostrowo. This gave him especially in the Polish population in the province of Posen and West Prussia, but also in German Catholics the reputation of a martyr. His elevation to cardinal was still in custody on March 15, 1875. A cardinal priest, he received the titular church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli. He also belonged to the Cardinals, who participated in the conclave of 1878.

Pope Leo XIII. Ledóchowski appointed on 26 January 1892 Prefect of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith ( Propaganda Fide ). Then he stepped back on 2 February as Archbishop of Gniezno and was on November 30, Cardinal Priest of San Lorenzo in Lucina.

His nephew Vladimir Ledochowski was the General of the Jesuits, a niece of the holy foundress Ursula Ledóchowska, another blessed foundress Maria Teresia Ledóchowska.

He was an honorary member of the Catholic Student Association KStV Austria Wien.
