Mike O'Callaghan

Donal Neil "Mike" O'Callaghan ( born September 10, 1929 in La Crosse, La Crosse County, Wisconsin, † March 5, 2004 in Las Vegas, Clark County, Nevada ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party and 1971 to 1979, Governor of the State of Nevada.

O'Callaghan joined with 16 years under pretense of a higher age the United States Marine Corps at, where he served until 1948. In 1950, he joined the Air Force and served in the Aleutians. In 1952 he settled enable the Army to take part in hostilities. During a battle in the Korean War, he lost by a mortar hit a part of his left leg. He was awarded the Silver Star and the Bronze Star. After his return to the United States he became a teacher at a high school and boxing coach. On the Basic High School in Henderson, Nevada, O'Callaghan was the history teacher of the current Senator from Nevada, Harry Reid, he also supported politically later.

O'Callaghans political career began in 1963 when, he was appointed by the then Governor of Nevada, Grant Sawyer appointed head of the newly established Department of Human Resources. 1964 appointed him U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson as Regional Director of the Office of Emergency Preparedness. 1966, O'allaghan as a candidate in the primaries of the Democratic Party for the office of Lieutenant Governor in part, subject, however. In 1970 he was nominated by his party as a candidate for the gubernatorial elections and scored a surprising victory against his Republican opponent, Lieutenant Governor Edward Fike. 1974 O'Callaghan was re-elected with a lead over his challenger, who is considered the largest in the history of Nevada's gubernatorial elections.

Despite great popularity O'Callaghan no longer went to for a third term. He was rather editor of the Las Vegas Sun, a position which he held until his death. He was also editor of the Henderson Home News and Boulder City News. In the 1990s O'Callaghan electoral observers in Nicaragua and northern Iraq. He is a strong supporter of Israel.

On 5 March 2004 Mike O'Callaghan died of a heart attack after he collapsed during a morning show in Las Vegas.

A completed as part of a highway bypass around the Hoover Dam in October 2010 bridge over the Colorado River between Nevada and Arizona named Mike O'Callaghan - Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge.
